Foundation Increases Grants for Critical Care Nurse Training in Uganda

December 11, 2023 -Cincinnati, OH -- The Health Carousel Foundation and the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Union (UNMU) announced an expanded partnership with a commitment to critical care nurse training in Uganda in 2024 and beyond. The announcement marks an expansion of the relationship between the two organizations, which began in late 2022 with the creation of a nurse training lab at UNMU headquarters in Kampala. Subsequently, a pilot training program was launched in early 2023 that provided online critical care training to an initial cohort of Ugandan nurses.

With the overwhelming success of the 12-nurse pilot program and their upcoming program completion, the Health Carousel Foundation is pleased to increase funding to support up to 50 critical care nurse trainees in 2024.

Using the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) core curriculum as a guide, the Health Carousel Foundation will provide ongoing support and fund online coursework to aid in the future development of Ugandan nurses who work with the critically ill. UNMU will oversee the nurse selection process, provide access to the computer training lab at their headquarters, and identify senior nurses who can advise the nurse-scholars during the year-long program.

"I am beyond thrilled to have this opportunity to partner with Ugandan nurses and their leadership as they strive to improve the outcomes for the patients they serve," stated Health Carousel’s chief nursing officer, Earl Dalton. "This initiative will improve the skills of nurses caring for Uganda's sickest patients and aligns perfectly with Health Carousel's mission to improve lives and healthcare. It's an honor to work alongside Ugandans to improve health outcomes for this patient population."

A large number of Ugandan nurses and midwives have expressed interest in applying for acceptance in this new round of training. UNMU will post updated information regarding eligibility requirements and the application process on its website in early 2024. Representatives of the Health Carousel Foundation are eagerly looking forward to visiting Uganda in May of 2024 to celebrate the graduation of the initial cohort of critical care scholars with UNMU.
