Foundation Grant Brings Compassionate Care Training to Over One Million Nurses Via Leading App
Three world-class nursing organizations, The World Continuing Education Alliance (WCEA), The DAISY Foundation, and Chamberlain University, have joined together to ensure that nurses across the globe receive the training needed to provide extraordinary compassionate care. This 3-course program is free to the nearly 1.2 million healthcare professionals registered on the WCEA learning platform and all nurses globally practicing in low and middle-income countries.
A grant from the Health Carousel Foundation helped make this compassionate care training available.
A partnership between Chamberlain University and The DAISY Foundation initially developed the three-and-a-half-hour course content. A content agreement between Chamberlain and WCEA has made it available at no cost to nurses in low- and middle-income countries in its network, primarily across Africa and Asia.
“When our Patrick was hospitalized in 1999, we expected his nurses’ clinical competence. We did not expect and were deeply touched by their compassion and sensitivity. This course helps nurses learn how to create that human connection that patients and families need when they are most vulnerable. Thank you, WCEA, Chamberlain, and Health Carousel Foundation, for bringing it to nurses and students in under-resourced countries,” stated Bonnie Barnes, co-founder of The DAISY Foundation.
In this program, learners will reflect on the intrinsic or extrinsic motivators that led them into healthcare and how to cultivate meaningful and healing relationships in their daily practice. Topics include Swanson’s Caring Theory and the impact of extraordinary nursing care on patients, families, and others. Personal stories from patients, families, and nurses who have received the DAISY Award are also shared.
“A shining characteristic that unites nurses around the globe is the compassion we show for our patients. In this course, nurses can reconnect to the love that motivates their caring and help them reconnect to this foundational aspect of nursing. I am incredibly excited to see this content released for nurses worldwide. A special thanks go out to The DAISY Foundation, Chamberlain University, and WCEA for making this course a reality,” stated Earl Dalton, chief clinical officer and VP of clinical services of Health Carousel.

About the DAISY Foundation
The DAISY Foundation is a not-for-profit organization established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes by members of his family. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little-known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. (DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System.) The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired the creation of The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses, an evidence-based means of providing nurse recognition and thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families. Today, the Foundation expresses gratitude to the nursing profession internationally in over 7,300 healthcare facilities and schools of nursing in 44 countries through recognition programs that honor the super-human work nurses do wherever they practice, in whatever role they serve, and throughout their careers – from Nursing Student through Lifetime Achievement in Nursing and through the J. Patrick Barnes Grants for Nursing Research and Evidence-Based Practice Projects, Health Equity Grants and Medical Mission Grants. More information is available at http://DAISYfoundation.org.
